in August.
Announcing Auditions:
Latin Theatre Projects & Burien Little Theatre announce auditions for their joint production of Beauty of the Father by Pulitzer Prize-winning Nilo Cruz, directed by Michael D. Blum.
This play by Pulitzer Prize–winner Nilo Cruz is set in Andalusia, Spain, where the restless ghost of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca still wanders through the streets and converses with the living. BEAUTY OF THE FATHER is about a young American girl who travels to this part of the world to meet her estranged father and becomes romantically involved with his Moroccan companion. We are all familiar with the love triangle but in Beauty of the Father, Nilo Cruz introduces an unrequited love quadrangle crossing two generations and the ghost of Federico Garcia Lorca.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:
Note: all character are principal parts
Ghost of Federico García Lorca – 30-40 yo male – Handsome, intelligent. Initially only visible to Emiliano, he advises, taunts, and comments on Emiliano’s actions and thoughts and the events of the play. He reflects on his own life and death and the universality of passion, human relationships, and mortality.
Emiliano – 50-ish male – Passionate artist with complicated relationships with his longtime female companion, his younger Moroccan male lover, and his daughter who comes to visit him after many years of separation. Boisterous and fun-loving but with the aesthetics of an artist. Somewhat gruff with a serious, softer warmth.
Paquita – 50-ish female – Beautiful and passionate if somewhat world weary. Bohemian free-spirit with a wicked sense of humor. Comedic timing is key.
Marina – 20-30 female – Beautiful, free-spirited, passionate and warm. Fun loving and adventuresome. The daughter of Emiliano, who unwittingly develops a romantic attachment to Karim, her father’s lover.
Karim – 20-30 male – Charismatic, handsome with strong sexual appeal. He is the lynchpin of the romantic quadrangle of the play. He has a prideful personality and youthful appeal that is seductive (and perhaps a little manipulative). However, above all he is passionate about life and love.
All roles except Emiliano are open. Actors of all races and ethnicities are encouraged to audition.
